Pray for Paris
Westside Gunn announced Pray for Paris after attending Virgil Abloh's Off-White show in Paris on 18 January 2020, and Abloh, a close friend, made the cover. He took a cropped detail of Caravaggio's David with the Head of Goliath, the version held in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, in which the young David holds out the severed head of the giant.
Abloh then made one change. Westside Gunn's signature chains are photoshopped around David's neck, turning a Baroque masterpiece into a Griselda album cover. The Ringer described the chains as "clumsily Photoshopped," and the rough join is part of the point: high art and street jewellery pasted together with no attempt to hide the seam.
The image suits a rapper who fills his records with references to fashion and art auctions, and The Ringer heard the album itself as a David taking a defiant step forward against the Goliaths behind him. Gunn revealed the artwork on 3 April 2020, and the album was released on 17 April 2020 through Griselda and Empire.
