My Name Is My Name
The cover of Pusha T's solo debut on GOOD Music is a black barcode on a plain white field, with no name, no title and no photograph. The team behind it, creative directors Virgil Abloh and Capricorn Clark with art director Justin Saunders, began with the idea of a thumbprint as a mark of identity, and the barcode grew out of it, which The Fader described as "a 21st century version of the thumbprint."
The goal was something stark and minimal, a product label for a rapper who had spent a career describing the drug trade in the language of business. For the photography, the team looked to Eve Arnold, Gordon Parks and Howard Bingham, and to old Big Daddy Kane images.
Inside, Fabien Montique's photographs fill out the story, including a crocodile image Kanye West chose for its eerie, evil feel and a "not equal" sign Pusha painted by hand on glass. Joe Perez and the DONDA design team turned the ideas into layouts. The album was released on 8 October 2013, and its barcode remains one of the starkest covers in modern rap.
