Yeezus
Yeezus has no cover image in the usual sense. The physical CD came in a clear jewel case with no artwork, sealed with a strip of red tape and a sticker on the back carrying the sample credits and barcode. The digital cover simply shows that object: a bare disc in a transparent case with a red strip along one edge.
West wanted every bit of attention on the music, and he later explained the idea to the BBC's Annie Mac: "this is an open casket for the CD." Virgil Abloh, who worked on the project through West's creative company DONDA, said the image "represented the death of a CD," a tribute to a format they had grown up with, and added, "we kinda outdid ourselves in a way."
The minimal design drew comparisons. The Source noted its resemblance to a 2001 packaging concept by Peter Saville for New Order's single "Crystal," and designer David Rudnick said it was noticeably similar to his artwork for a 2011 release by Boys Noize and Erol Alkan. Yeezus was released on 18 June 2013.
