untitled unmastered. arrived with almost no warning on 4 March 2016, a set of unfinished demos from the sessions for To Pimp a Butterfly, and its cover looks as raw as the music. NPR described it as "an unadorned, almost industrial green field," with the title in small lowercase letters and a full stop.

The sleeve was designed by Vlad Sepetov, who also made the covers for To Pimp a Butterfly and DAMN. Every song on the record is titled "untitled" plus a number and a date, and the plain green square follows the same logic, presenting the project like a folder of working files.

The release followed months of demand. Kendrick had performed untitled songs on The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show and at the 2016 Grammys, and LeBron James publicly urged Top Dawg Entertainment's Anthony Tiffith to put them out. The collection debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The cover was designed by Vladimir Sepetov, the art director behind much of Kendrick's visual work.
