We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service
A Tribe Called Quest's final album carries a work by the American artist Richard Prince, the painter and photographer famous for appropriating other people's images. The cover uses an untitled canvas Prince made in 2015, later shown as part of Q-Tip's own art collection. The packaging was art directed and designed by Anita Marisa Boriboon. The album was recorded at the AbLab, Q-Tip's home studio in New Jersey.
The first version was posted by Jarobi White on 3 November 2016. In the corner sat a small kneeling figure painted in red, black and green, the woman from the cover of The Low End Theory, with the group's logo glowing green above. At the centre a naked woman crouched and photographed herself in front of a grid of boxes. Ambrosia for Heads read it as a picture of the generation gap, with Tribe's old muse "a bit cowed" beside a louder, more shameless new figure. Prince was known for turning Instagram selfies into art, so the theme fitted his practice.
Ahead of release, murals tied to the artwork were painted in Melbourne and Sydney. The album came eight months after the death of Phife Dawg, and the cover closes a visual story that began with Tribe's colour-painted women of the early 1990s. It was released on 11 November 2016.
