Doris
Earl Sweatshirt became a legend while he was missing. At 16 he disappeared from Odd Future, and fans chanted "Free Earl" until it emerged he had been sent to a therapeutic school in Samoa. Doris, his debut album, was the first full statement after his return, and its cover is a plain, quiet black-and-white photograph of Earl beside a crucifix on a white wall.
The album credits photography to Jason Dill, the professional skateboarder and photographer, with art direction and design by Anita Marisa Boriboon and illustrations by Kunle Martins, the New York graffiti artist. A loose handwritten scrawl runs across the top of the image.
Doris was released on 20 August 2013 on Earl's Tan Cressida label through Columbia, and it debuted at number five in the United States. The stark, homemade-looking cover matched its dense, inward-looking songs.
