God Does Like Ugly

JIDPainting2025

The hand-painted cover of JID's fourth album is the work of the artist Luciano Maia. Its style pays homage to Mati Klarwein's painting for Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, the 1970 jazz-fusion landmark, a debt Northern Transmissions pointed out when the album arrived. Like Klarwein's work, it is a dense, surreal scene of bodies, sky and colour, with a pale central figure framed by radiating rays above a crowd of brightly coloured people.

The title flips the Southern saying "God don't like ugly." JID took it from his late grandmother, who remarked after watching a chaotic news broadcast in 2019, "I guess God does like ugly if he letting this happen." Many listeners read the white figure at the centre of Maia's painting as a god-like presence, possibly JID himself, watching over the people below, which ties the image to an album about faith, pain and the ugliness of the world. The title also echoes God Loves Ugly, the 2002 album by the Minneapolis group Atmosphere.

JID revealed the full artwork on 20 July 2025 in Washington Square Park in New York, where he also announced a run of small "Dollar & A Dream" concerts. The album was released on 8 August 2025 through Dreamville and Interscope.
