Alligator Bites Never Heal
Doechii sits upright in an armchair, staring directly into the camera while holding a pale alligator across her lap. The pose is calm and confrontational, and the animal gives the image an immediate sense of danger. Photographed by John Jay, the sleeve connects the Tampa artist's self-described "Swamp Princess" identity to a specific Florida landscape and its wildlife.
The composition also recalls Minnie Riperton's 1975 Adventures in Paradise cover, which featured the singer with a lion. Doechii replaces that animal with an alligator, transforming the older image into a statement about her own origins. The alligator on the shoot, named Coconut, was a real animal. Doechii later discussed her familiarity with it in an interview with ELLE.
When announcing the 2024 mixtape, Doechii connected its title to the alligator's "death roll," using the animal's struggle as a metaphor for surviving a difficult period in her life and career. The cover makes that idea tangible: she holds the creature without flinching, facing the viewer as the central figure in a scene of controlled tension. The image is a memorable example of portrait photography carrying autobiography, regional identity and art-historical reference at once.
