CHROMAKOPIA

Tyler, the CreatorPortrait2024

Tyler, the Creator usually makes colourful covers, so CHROMAKOPIA was a shock. The sepia-toned portrait shows him wearing a ceramic mask of his own face and stretching out his right hand towards whoever is behind the camera, introducing his new character, St. Chroma.

The cover's art direction is credited to Shaun Llewellyn and Luis "Panch" Perez, Tyler's collaborator of more than ten years. Perez told the Recording Academy that Tyler wanted it to feel like it came from a film noir of the 1930s and 1940s, and he told Mission magazine that Tyler shared old Hollywood studio test photos of actors for Hitchcock films as the reference. They shot it digitally because of the tight deadline, mixing continuous light and strobe.

CHROMAKOPIA was released on 28 October 2024 and debuted at number one. The masked portrait, about the gap between public persona and private self, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Album Cover.
