The Score

FugeesGroup photograph1996

The cover of The Score shows the three Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, in dark, close-up portraits, their faces emerging from deep shadow, with the title in gold at the bottom like the poster for a heist film.

The trio from New Jersey mixed rap with soul, reggae and Caribbean sounds, and their cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" became a worldwide hit. Released on 13 February 1996, The Score won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and became one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time.

The film noir look fits the title and the group's love of cinematic storytelling on songs like "Ready or Not" and "Fu-Gee-La." It was the group's final album, and the cover is the lasting image of Lauryn Hill just before her solo career made her one of the most celebrated artists of her generation.
