Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
OutKast's debut introduced André 3000 and Big Boi, two teenagers from East Point, Atlanta. The cover shows them up close, outlined in orange with their shadows falling across a deep purple and red background, the group's logo above them and the long title running along the bottom.
The album credits the artwork to Christopher Stern and the photography to Timothy White. The moody colours and dramatic shadows gave the young duo the look of a classic soul record, a fitting start for a group that would mix funk, soul and rap more freely than anyone. A copy of the LP is now held by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was released on 26 April 1994 and carried the single "Player's Ball." When OutKast won Best New Rap Group at the 1995 Source Awards and the New York crowd booed, André answered with the line that announced Southern rap: "The South got something to say."
