Mystic Stylez
The cover of Three 6 Mafia's debut looks like a horror film poster. The Memphis crew crowd together in dark hoods and shadows against a blood-red background, with the title in jagged yellow and red letters at the bottom and "DJ Paul & Juicy J" printed at the top.
Mystic Stylez, released on 23 May 1995, captured the sound DJ Paul and Juicy J had built on cassette tapes in Memphis: slow, menacing drum machines, eerie samples and chanted hooks about the occult and street violence. Songs like "Da Summa" and "Tear Da Club Up" spread hand to hand across the South.
The dark, occult imagery matched a sound that later generations would borrow again and again. Trap producers, Atlanta rappers and the internet's phonk scene have all sampled or imitated the Memphis style that Mystic Stylez introduced, and Three 6 Mafia went on to win an Academy Award in 2006.
