The Money Store
Death Grips, the Sacramento trio led by the shouting MC Ride, made a major-label debut as abrasive as anything rap had produced. The cover matches it: a black-and-white image of a masochist with the band's name carved into her chest, held on a leash by a smoking sadist in a cap.
The image is by the artist Sua Yoo, who had worked with the band before. It first appeared in a zine, and the carved "Death Grips" lettering was added later for the album. The clean version, the one shown here and on streaming services, covers the figure's chest with a white bar carrying the album's title.
The Money Store was released in April 2012 on Epic, and its distorted, aggressive sound made it one of the most influential experimental rap records of its decade. The band reused the same artwork in 2015 for their soundtrack album Fashion Week.
