Kids See Ghosts

Takashi Murakami, who had drawn the Dropout Bear for Graduation, returned for Kanye West and Kid Cudi's joint album. His pastel, psychedelic scene shows a ghostly figure riding a sharp-toothed creature with haunted eyes, shaped like a sperm, as it flies through a forest with a mountain behind.

The background is based on Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and the credits list View of Mt. Fuji (1847) as its source. The two rappers appear as animals: West as a bear and Cudi as a fox. Cudi had suggested a dog, but West preferred the fox once he saw an early sketch. Murakami said his team followed a "very rudimental plan," sketching ideas on paper with West and his assistants.

West first teased a black-and-white version in April 2018, with only a few touches in colour, and captioned it "Murakami vibes." Murakami is credited for creative direction, artwork and calligraphy, with original drawing direction by Chieri Nakano. The album was released on 8 June 2018.
