Bandana

Freddie Gibbs & MadlibIllustration2019

The cover of Bandana is a cartoon. Quasimoto, the squeaky-voiced alter ego Madlib created in the late 1990s, sits on a zebra with a bandana around his neck and watches the buildings of Hollywood burn. A smashed piñata lies on the ground. The artwork is by Jeff Jank, Madlib's longtime collaborator and the designer behind much of the Stones Throw catalogue.

The image links the album to its predecessor. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib's first full album, Piñata, came out in 2014, and Flood noted that the zebra repeats a motif from that record, while the broken piñata in the corner signals a sequel. Putting Quasimoto on the front gave the cover to Madlib's side of the partnership, set against the crime and chaos of Gibbs's lyrics. A burning skyline seen from the back of a zebra captures the duo's mix of menace and absurd humour.

Madlib shared the cover on Twitter on 28 May 2019 with only a zebra emoji. Okayplayer greeted it with "MadGibbs coming with another classic." The same art was kept for the vinyl editions, including a white pressing of 1,000 copies for the Berlin shop HHV. The album was released on 28 June 2019.
