Savage Mode II

21 Savage & Metro BoominDigital art2020

The cover of Savage Mode II resurrects the crowded, gleaming visual language associated with Southern rap's late-1990s and early-2000s CD era. Its dark fantasy imagery and highly polished digital composition recall the record sleeves produced by Houston design studio Pen & Pixel for labels such as No Limit and Cash Money. In 2020, that style carried nostalgia and regional identity into a new generation of Atlanta trap.

The artwork's authorship requires care. Early coverage credited Pen & Pixel with the cover, but studio co-founder Shawn Brauch later said the released image had been changed from the design he submitted without his approval. He consequently did not regard the final version as an official Pen & Pixel design. Both the initial credit and his subsequent objection belong in the history of the sleeve.

Released in October 2020, the project paired 21 Savage's restrained delivery with Metro Boomin's ominous production. The artwork linked that contemporary sound to an older Southern rap tradition of dramatic typography, visual excess and digitally constructed scenes. The dispute over the final image also offers a revealing example of how a designer's work can change between submission and release.
