Donuts
The cover of Donuts is a frame from a videotape. In 2005 the director Andrew Gura was filming at the shoot for MED's "Push" video when he caught J Dilla in a cap with a Detroit D and a striped shirt, looking down and breaking into a wide smile. Stones Throw designer Jeff Jank turned that still into the sleeve, with nothing but the name and title above it.
Dilla was already very ill. Much of the album was assembled while he was in and out of Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, and it was released on 7 February 2006, his 32nd birthday. He died three days later, on 10 February, from complications of TTP and lupus. A blurry, joyful moment from a video set became the last image of him most fans would see.
His mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, said the picture perfectly captured his spirit. Donuts has since become one of the most influential instrumental hip-hop records ever made, and the soft, grainy video still on its front is now one of the most recognisable portraits in the music.
