Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version

Ol' Dirty BastardGraphic design1995

Ol' Dirty Bastard's solo debut is packaged as a food stamp identification card. The cover reproduces a laminated welfare ID, complete with his photograph, his signature and the album title typed where the personal details should be, issued by the "City of Brooklyn Zoo."

The joke was rooted in his real life. Writers have pointed to the cover as proof of his humour and of how openly he lived his public persona. While the album was in the top ten, MTV filmed him riding to the welfare office to cash a check and collect food stamps, and his eligibility was later revoked, with the episode cited as an example of welfare abuse.

The card became so famous that a later deluxe box set included a laminated reproduction of it. Art direction was by Alli, with photography by Danny Clinch, and the album was released by Elektra on 28 March 1995.
