Doggystyle
The Doggystyle cover was drawn by Snoop's cousin, Darryl "Joe Cool" Daniel. Snoop first saw Daniel's drawings while Daniel was in prison, and after his release Daniel appeared on "Murder Was the Case" and drew the artwork for the album.
The cartoon fills the frame with Snoop's world: a brick wall topped with dogs whose speech bubbles quote George Clinton's 1982 single "Atomic Dog," a song Snoop sampled often, in a busy comic-book scene. Some critics argued that the drawing objectifies women, reading it as a match for the album's lyrics about drugs, cars, sex and money.
Daniel never expected the attention. "I didn't think it would be iconic," he said of the sleeve. Released on 23 November 1993 by Death Row and Interscope, Doggystyle debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, and Daniel's drawing became one of the best-known illustrated covers in rap. He died in July 2024.
