Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde

The PharcydeIllustration1992

The members of the Pharcyde hurtle down a roller coaster in cartoon form, their expressions and bodies stretched by the speed of the ride. The cover's saturated colours, exaggerated characters and amusement-park setting announce the group's humour before the needle touches the record. Its illustration was created by Richard "Slick" Wyrgatsch, also credited as Den Slick, with art direction associated with FUCT.

Released by Delicious Vinyl in 1992, the album offered a distinctive Los Angeles perspective. The group brought self-mockery, storytelling and elastic vocal performances to a scene often represented through more severe street photography. The artwork gave that sensibility a visual counterpart. The roller coaster is both an invitation to enter their world and a warning that the trip will be unruly.

The original packaging extended the imagery beyond the front sleeve, rewarding listeners who unfolded and examined the physical edition. That makes the cover a useful case study in illustration as a complete record-package experience, where the front image, interior artwork and the group's personality work together.
