Aquemini
The title Aquemini joins the star signs of OutKast's two members, André's Gemini and Big Boi's Aquarius, and the cover paints them as a matched pair. Greg Hawkins' artwork shows the duo larger than life in a vivid, crowded scene, styled like the poster for a 1970s film.
David Browne of The New York Times read the cover as an homage to 1970s blaxploitation cinema, and the comparison fits: heroic poses, swirling colour and a supporting cast of characters around the two stars. Art direction and design were by D.L. Warfield, and photography by Tom Smugala.
The packaging played on the pairing too. A sticker on the release introduced Big Boi as "the playa" and André as "the poet," the two sides of a partnership the album celebrates. Aquemini was released by LaFace on 29 September 1998.
