Chance the RapperPortrait2016

Chance the Rapper's third mixtape shows him from the shoulders up in a black cap with a white number 3, looking up and smiling into a glowing pink and red sky. The 3 marks it as his third project, and the bright, soft colours suit a joyful record full of gospel choirs.

The cover was made by the Chicago artist Brandon Breaux, who also created the art for Chance's 10 Day and Acid Rap, and he planned the three covers as one sequence tracing Chance's rise. Breaux chose digital painting so people would care about the artist's hand, and he worked by stripping things away. His early idea of surrounding Chance with vices was dropped, and the only text he kept was Chance's name. As he put it to The Hundreds, "the art is the brand."

Coloring Book was released on 13 May 2016, first as an Apple Music exclusive, and the image went up on billboards, bus stops and walls across the country with no slogans or logos. In 2017 it became the first streaming-only release to win a Grammy, taking Best Rap Album.
