We Can't Be Stopped

Geto BoysPhotograph1991

In 1991 Bushwick Bill of the Houston group Geto Boys was shot in the eye after a night of PCP and Everclear. While he was still in hospital, his bandmates Willie D and Scarface wheeled him down a corridor on a gurney, and Bill pulled off his own eye bandage for the camera. The picture became the cover of their next album.

The photograph was taken by Cliff Blodget, co-owner of the group's label Rap-A-Lot Records. According to Andscape, when Blodget raised the question of a cover, Willie D answered that Bill was alive and they could shoot it right there. Bill, heavily sedated, said he did not care. He later called the decision "pretty wrong," and Scarface said he never wanted to put Bill out there like that, which shows in his uneasy face in the frame.

We Can't Be Stopped came out in July 1991 and went platinum the following year. Shocking, raw and uncomfortable to look at, its cover remains one of the most notorious images in rap history, and a document of how far the Houston scene was willing to go.
