Late Registration
Kanye West's second album continues the college story he began with The College Dropout. On the cover his mascot, the Dropout Bear, stands at the size of a small child between two huge wooden doors at Princeton University, dressed in a blazer with a school crest, a tiny figure at the entrance of an institution.
The art direction and packaging were designed by the Brooklyn studio Morning Breath, Inc., with creative direction by Louis Marino and photography by Sarah A. Friedman and Kris Yiengst. The bear, first drawn by the designer Sam Hansen for the debut, was redesigned for this album with googly eyes and perky ears, the first of several makeovers it would get on Kanye's records.
Late Registration was released on 30 August 2005 and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. The bear went on to its graduation two years later, on a cover by Takashi Murakami, closing the trilogy that the Princeton doors had opened.
