DS2
The cover of DS2 is a cloud of purple colour blooming through water, with no sign of Future anywhere. The image is a stock photograph titled "Color drop in water, photographed in motion", made by Sanja Tošić, an artist based in Slovenia. It belonged to her "Silky Smooth" series on Shutterstock, and she said the rights were bought by Future's label, Epic Records, the month before the album came out.
The swirl reads as an obvious nod to the album's full title, Dirty Sprite 2, and to the purple codeine mixture that runs through Future's music. Tošić had no idea who Future was. When The Fader tracked her down on release day, she confirmed the work over Facebook chat: "I'm 110% it's mine." She would not say what she had been paid, only that her best single sale on the site had earned her $80.00. She added that she had since become a fan and wanted to buy a CD.
The story became part of the album's legend. Complex reported that the same picture had already appeared on the cover of a chemistry textbook. Future returned to the stock libraries for later releases, and The Fader traced the cover of EVOL in 2016 to another stock image. A cheap, anonymous photograph ended up fronting one of the defining trap records of the decade. Future posted the cover on 10 July 2015, and the album was released on 17 July 2015.
