The Marshall Mathers LP
The album was first going to be called Amsterdam, and Jonathan Mannion's first shoot took place there, on docks in freezing cold with Eminem in boxer shorts and a trench coat. When the plan changed, the team went to Detroit and photographed Eminem sitting on the porch of the house he had lived in as a teenager.
"It was all about the authenticity," Mannion said. "I could have put him on any steps, and it would have looked kind of cool." Eminem admitted he had "mixed feelings" about returning, because there were "a lot of good and bad memories in that house." The quiet, grey picture matches an album titled with his real name, the most personal record he had made.
An alternate cover shows him curled up beneath a loading dock with alcohol and pill bottles at his feet, which Entertainment Weekly's Will Hermes compared to a "dysfunctional Little Rascal." Art direction and design were by Jason Noto. The Marshall Mathers LP was released on 23 May 2000.
